The Legacy of Performance: A Brief History of the BMW 3 Series and M3
The flagship sports sedan since the 1970's, the BMW 3 series has steadily evolved throughout the years while still retaining the classic sporty BMW feel and quality that launched with the e21 back in 1975.

At ALP Autowerks, we live and breathe BMW. As a specialist BMW repair garage, we understand the passion behind the badge—especially when it comes to two of BMW’s most iconic nameplates: the BMW 3 Series and the legendary M3. Let’s take a drive through history and explore how these performance-driven machines became the cornerstone of BMW engineering and a favorite among driving enthusiasts worldwide.
The Birth of the BMW 3 Series: A Benchmark Since 1975
The BMW 3 Series first hit the roads in 1975, replacing the iconic 2002 model. Known internally as the E21, the original 3 Series set a new standard for compact executive cars, blending sportiness with everyday practicality. It wasn’t just a car—it was a driver’s car.
Over the decades, the 3 Series evolved through multiple generations:
-
E21 (1975–1983): The original 3 Series, featuring rear-wheel drive and fuel-injected engines.
-
E30 (1982–1994): A cult classic, beloved for its sharp handling and timeless design. This generation also introduced the very first BMW M3.
-
E36 (1990–2000): A leap in refinement, featuring improved aerodynamics and the introduction of VANOS variable valve timing.
-
E46 (1998–2006): Considered by many purists as the perfect blend of modern tech and analog driving feel.
-
E90/E91/E92/E93 (2005–2013): Known for introducing turbocharged engines and advanced safety systems.
-
F30 (2012–2019): The first 3 Series with electric power steering and a more upscale interior.
-
G20 (2019–present): A high-tech evolution with options for mild-hybrid systems and adaptive suspensions.
At ALP Autowerks, we service every generation of the 3 Series with the care and expertise your BMW deserves—whether it’s a classic E30 or a modern G20.
Enter the Legend: The BMW M3
In 1986, BMW Motorsport unveiled the first BMW M3, based on the E30 chassis. Designed for homologation in Group A touring car racing, the E30 M3 featured a high-revving 2.3L four-cylinder engine (S14), flared arches, and race-inspired dynamics. It wasn’t just a performance car—it was a street-legal race car.
Each subsequent generation of the M3 pushed the limits of what a performance sedan (and later, coupe and convertible) could be:
-
E30 M3 (1986–1992): The original; lightweight, nimble, and highly collectible.
-
E36 M3 (1992–1999): A smoother, more refined M3, with a straight-six engine and more creature comforts.
-
E46 M3 (2000–2006): Arguably the most beloved M3, with the iconic 3.2L S54 engine and near-perfect chassis balance.
-
E92 M3 (2007–2013): The only V8-powered M3, delivering 414 hp from the naturally aspirated S65 engine.
-
F80 M3 (2014–2018): Turbocharged power enters the scene with the 3.0L inline-six S55 engine, pushing out up to 444 hp in Competition trim.
-
G80 M3 (2021–present): A bold design, optional xDrive AWD, and over 500 hp in the Competition model—this M3 is as powerful as it is controversial.
Whether you need servicing, diagnostics, or factory-accurate repairs, ALP Autowerks is your trusted BMW M3 specialist. We know what it takes to keep your M3 running at peak performance, because we’re enthusiasts too.
